UAE Job Scam Catalog (2026): Never Pay a Fee

The single rule that filters nearly every UAE job scam. No genuine employer ever asks you to pay money before you earn it.

UAE labour law puts the cost of your visa, work permit, medical test and Emirates ID on the employer (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021). The moment a "job offer" asks for a fee, you are not talking to a company. You are talking to the scam.

The 2026 scam playbook has five patterns. All of them are variants of that one rule.

The visa-deposit scam

A fake offer plus a small processing fee. But by law the employer pays for your visa, so any candidate-facing fee is the scam.

The offer arrives with perfect paperwork, then a small cost appears. A visa deposit, an "ATS optimisation fee", a medical fee, a security clearance. The fee is never large. A few hundred to a few thousand AED, just small enough to pay without thinking. Payment goes to a personal account or an exchange house, and the job evaporates.

The WhatsApp-only interview

Scammers impersonate Emirates, Etihad, Emirates NBD, DP World, ADNOC, even MOHRE. Real recruiters use WhatsApp only after an official application.

They run the whole process over WhatsApp or Telegram from an international number (+91, +92, +44), offer you the job, and then move to the fee.

The fake ATS score

A message says your CV scored 29% and offers to fix it for AED 350 to 400. It is a fake service built on real ATS anxiety. No employer sells you your own score.

New in 2026. Real ATS behaviour is invisible to candidates. Anyone selling you your own score is selling air.

The "AI training" or data-entry job

Remote roles that collect unpaid labour or a training fee before any paycheck. The pay is suspiciously good and the interview is a formality.

These roles promise easy remote pay. "AI training", data entry, customer service. They collect weeks of free labour before paychecks that never arrive, or charge for "training materials" up front.

The equipment check

An overpaid check to buy a laptop, then a request to send the difference back. The check bounces and the job never existed.

"We'll send you a check to buy a laptop." The check overpays, they ask you to return the difference, and the check bounces. No one you have not met needs you to forward money, in any direction, for any reason.

What changed in 2026

Offer letters are AI-perfect now, so the signal moved from the document to the process. Official channel, verifiable licence, MOHRE number, no fees.

The document is no longer a reliable tell. Scammers generate flawless offer letters in minutes. Judge the process, not the PDF. A real employer has an official application channel, a registered licence, a MOHRE offer number, and never asks for money.

The red-flag checklist

Free email domains, brand-new recruiter profiles, urgency, passport scans pre-contract, an offer without an interview, payment to a personal account.

  • Free email domains (gmail.com, lookalike company domains with one letter swapped)
  • Recruiter profiles younger than six months, with a handful of connections
  • Urgency. "The slot will expire today, pay now"
  • A request for your passport scan before any contract
  • An offer without any interview at all
  • Payment into a personal account or exchange house

The verification that works (free, minutes)

Three free checks, a MOHRE offer number, a trade licence on DED/ADDED/SEDD, and a licensed recruitment agency, catch every pattern above.

If you already paid

Stop paying, report to Dubai Police eCrime and MOHRE, keep every record, and post the pattern for the next candidate.

  • Stop paying immediately.
  • Report to Dubai Police eCrime (ecrime.ae / 901) and MOHRE (800 60).
  • Keep the conversation, payment records and contact details.
  • Post the pattern on r/UAE or r/DubaiJobs so the next candidate recognises it.

The enforcement numbers back the reporting channels up. 1,300+ companies were fined AED 34 million in 2025 for fake job practices, and MOHRE has been sweeping fake recruiter accounts in 2026. Reports work. They are how the sweeps happen.

Scammers target candidates who cannot verify locally, especially people applying from abroad. If that is you, the checks above matter more, not less. When you do find a genuine role, apply within the first 48 hours. The live jobs feed pulls straight from company career pages, which is exactly where real applications go.

Quick answers

Why does the UAE have so many job scams?

Scammers target people applying from abroad who cannot verify a company locally, and the flood of applicants makes it easy to find them. The same patterns repeat across r/Scams, r/UAE and r/DubaiJobs.

Is a WhatsApp job interview normal in the UAE?

Real UAE recruiters do use WhatsApp, but only after you have applied through an official channel. A recruiter who works only in chat, from an international number, is a red flag.

What is the ATS optimisation fee scam?

A 2026 pattern. Your CV scored 29% on our ATS, pay AED 350 to 400 and we fix it. It is a fake service. Real ATS behaviour is invisible to candidates.

Is it safe to send a passport scan before signing a contract?

No. A request for your passport scan before any contract is a red flag that appears across the scam threads.

What should I do if a fake recruiter already got money from me?

Stop paying, report to Dubai Police eCrime (ecrime.ae / 901) and MOHRE (800 60), keep all records, and post the pattern so the next candidate recognises it.
